Panetta Arrives in London With Speech, Meetings Scheduled

LONDON, Jan. 17, 2013 – Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta arrived here today for the last scheduled stop on his weeklong tour of European capitals, which also has taken him to Lisbon, Portugal; Madrid and Rome.

While in London, Panetta is scheduled to give a speech at King’s College. He also will meet with members of Parliament and with Defense Secretary Philip Hammond.

Earlier this week, Panetta told reporters traveling with him that as defense secretary and in his previous position as CIA director, he has seen how important the relationship is between the American and British intelligence communities.

“We've partnered very closely to confront every major security challenge facing our nations,” he added.

Panetta said his discussions with Hammond will focus on the transition in Afghanistan, the Middle East and the challenges in North Africa.

The goal for his visit, he said, is to “enhance our cooperation so that we can meet those challenges at a time of fiscal constraint.”
