DOD Spokesman Calls Hagel Asia Trip a Success

WASHINGTON, April 11, 2014 – Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel believes his just completed 10-day trip to the Asia-Pacific region was an “overwhelming success,” a Pentagon spokesman said today.

Hagel hosted the Association of Southeast Asian Nations defense ministerial in Hawaii, before moving on to Japan, China and Mongolia.

“This trip offered yet another opportunity to share views and exchange ideas on a wide range of topics,” Army Col. Steven Warren said. “It is another visible demonstration of the importance the department places on the Asia-Pacific region, and the continuing priority we place on the rebalance.”

During a meeting today at the Pentagon, Hagel discussed the trip and other global concerns with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. It was the U.N. official’s second visit to the Pentagon.

The two discussed continuing U.S. support to U.N. peacekeeping operations, and the importance of U.S. participation in humanitarian and disaster relief efforts around the world, Warren said.

In other news, Warren announced the USNS Cesar Chavez has joined the task force hunting for the missing Malaysian aircraft. The Chavez will provide food and other logistics support to the Royal Australian Navy ships conducting the search about 1,200 miles northwest of Perth.
